Salvage is one of the easiest things to misunderstand in Marathon at first, because it looks like ordinary loot but works more like a progression material. Instead of being simple vendor junk, salvage is mainly used for faction upgrades, Armory barter, and certain delivery objectives like DCON contracts.
If you are trying to work out what salvage is worth keeping, which pieces are just common unstable materials, or how salvage connects to upgrades and re-gearing, this is where that starts to make sense. Salvage in Marathon comes in all five rarities: Standard, Enhanced, Deluxe, Superior, and Prestige.
The easiest way to think about salvage is in two layers. The first layer is the Unstable materials, which are the basic building blocks you will keep seeing early on. Items like Unstable Biomass, Unstable Diode, Unstable Gunmetal, Unstable Lead, and Unstable Gel.
The second layer is the broader upgrade material pool, which includes higher-tier items like Amygdala Drive, Neural Insulation, Paradox Circuit, Predictive Framework, Synapse Cube, and Alien Alloy. These are the kinds of salvage items that show up deeper in faction upgrade trees and matter much more once your progression starts getting expensive.
