Runner Shells are one of the most important parts of Marathon because they shape how your character plays from the start. Bungie describes them as “moddable biosynthetic bodies” that your consciousness transfers into for runs on Tau Ceti. In simple terms, Runner Shells are the base for your build, with each one built around a different role or playstyle.
This page is here to help you understand what each Marathon Runner Shell is, what it is meant to do, and how it fits into the bigger build system. Currently, Marathon has a total of six Runner Shells: Destroyer, Assassin, Recon, Vandal, Thief, and Triage. There is also Rook, which is a scavenger mode frame instead of a standard shell.
Each shell has its own clear identity. Destroyer is built for direct combat, Assassin focuses on stealth, Recon is about tracking and intel, Vandal leans into speed and disruption, Thief is centered on loot and mobility, and Triage supports survival and team play.
That gives Marathon a strong class-like system, but Bungie does not treat shells like locked hero characters. Shells are meant to work with your weapons, implants, and cores, so your final build can still feel very different even when using the same shell.
Bungie has also confirmed that more Runner Shells are planned in future seasonal updates, so this part of Marathon can keep growing over time.
