About Cores in Marathon

Cores are one of the biggest parts of buildcrafting in Marathon because they shape how a Runner Shell actually plays. Most Marathon Cores are tied to a specific shell, and instead of acting like simple stat boosts, they change or improve that shell’s abilities in a more direct way.

That is what makes the system interesting. A core can push the same shell in very different directions depending on what you equip. For example, a Thief core adds a second Grapple Device charge, while another lets the Pickpocket Drone pulse and ping nearby enemies when it is not being piloted.

Marathon also treats Cores as a major part of the full gear setup, right alongside weapons, mods, and implants. You can equip up to two Cores in a shell loadout, which makes them an important part of tuning your build before you drop in.

Cores also tie into progression. Sekiguchi Genetics is the faction most closely linked to unlocking shell-related unlocks, including core access through its upgrade tracks, and future seasonal updates can expand the core pool even further.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Cores are Runner shell-focused upgrade items in Marathon that change or improve how a Runner Shell’s abilities work. They are one of the main systems used to shape a build beyond just weapons and implants.

Cores work by modifying the behavior of a shell’s abilities. Some improve an ability you already have, while others add a new effect or make that ability stronger in a specific situation.

Yes. Most Marathon Cores are tied to a specific Runner Shell.

You can equip up to two Cores in a Runner Shell loadout. That gives you room to shape your shell around mobility, support, stealth, tracking, or damage pressure, depending on the shell and the cores you choose.

Cores mainly focus on changing shell abilities, while implants act more like broader stat or perk support pieces. In simple terms, Cores shape how your shell plays, while implants help round out the rest of your Runner's stats.

Sekiguchi Genetics is the faction most closely tied to Cores right now. Its progression tracks are closely connected to shell upgrades and core-related unlocks in the Armory.
