About Backpacks in Marathon

Backpacks are one of the most useful gear pieces in Marathon because they do two jobs at once. They give you more inventory space, and many of them also add unique effects (perks) that can help during a run. That makes backpacks more than simple storage upgrades. A higher tier backpack can change how much loot you bring out and how smoothly your loadout works in the field.

Currently, there are four main families for Backpacks: Base Packs, Ammo Packs, Med Packs, and Sneak Packs. There are also three main slot tiers right now: 8-slot, 16-slot, and 24-slot.

Base Packs are the straightforward option and focus on extra carrying space. Ammo Packs add inventory space while helping stowed ballistic weapons reload and stowed volt weapons recharge. Med Packs improve health and shield item use, while Sneak Packs lean into stealth effects tied to looting, doors, or crouching at low heat.

Backpacks also tie into progression. CyberAcme faction upgrade tracks can reward you with Enhanced, Deluxe, and Superior backpacks for purchase in the Armory.

Backpacks increase your inventory space in Marathon, which lets you carry more loot, gear, and supplies out of a run. Many backpacks also include passive effects, which means they can help with things like ammo handling, consumable use, or stealth.

There are over 13 backpacks in Marathon. That pool includes different backpack families and multiple size tiers, from smaller 8-slot options up to a 24-slot prestige backpack.

The current backpack families are Base Packs, Ammo Packs, Med Packs, and Sneak Packs. Base Packs focus on storage, Ammo Packs help with weapon reload and recharge effects, Med Packs improve healing and shield item use, and Sneak Packs add stealth-focused utility

Backpacks come in 8-slot, 16-slot, and 24-slot sizes. In general, larger backpacks offer more carrying space, and higher-end versions can also come with stronger passive perks.

Better backpacks can be found through looting, defeating other players, and securing supply drops. They can also be purchased through the Armory once the right CyberAcme upgrades are unlocked.

CyberAcme is the faction most closely tied to backpack progression right now. Its upgrade tree includes nodes that unlock better backpack tiers for purchase in the Armory.
