Weapon ammo in Marathon affects how long you can stay in a run, what weapons make sense together, and how easily you can recover after a bad match (also based on the weapon type and the ammo it uses). Marathon currently uses five main ammo types: Light Rounds, Heavy Rounds, MIPS Rounds, Volt Battery, and Volt Cell.
This page is here to make that system easier to understand. If you are trying to figure out which weapons share the same ammo type, what each ammo type is used for, or why some ammo feels much harder to manage, this is the place to start.
Light Rounds are the most common standard ballistic ammo type and have a max stack size of 180. Heavy Rounds are used by harder-hitting ballistic weapons and stack up to 120. MIPS Rounds are a much tighter ammo type tied to high-damage precision weapons and stack up to 12. On the energy side, Volt Battery stacks up to 8, while Volt Cell stacks up to 12. Both Volt ammo types also lose any remaining ammo on reload, which makes them less forgiving if you waste shots or reload too early.
Ammo also matters because it shapes build decisions. Some weapons are easier to sustain because their ammo pool is more common, while others hit harder but are much harder to keep fed during a run.
During runs, ammo can come from Ammo Crates, containers, and enemy drops, and outside of runs, it can also be tied to Armory access, completing Faction contract,s and leveling up your Faction.
Marathon currently uses five ammo types: Light Rounds, Heavy Rounds, MIPS Rounds, Volt Battery, and Volt Cell.
Light Rounds are the standard small-caliber ballistic ammo type in Marathon. Public ammo data lists a max stack size of 180, which makes them one of the more forgiving ammo pools to carry.
Heavy Rounds are used by harder-hitting ballistic weapons. Public ammo data lists a max stack size of 120, which puts them below Light Rounds but still well above the tighter ammo pools.
MIPS Rounds are a specialized ammo type used by certain high-damage precision weapons. They have a max stack size of 12, which makes them much more limited than Light or Heavy Rounds.
Both are energy ammo types for Volt weapons, but they are used by different parts of the weapon pool. Volt Battery has a max stack size of 8, while Volt Cell stacks up to 12.
Weapon ammo matters because it affects how sustainable your loadout is during a run. Some weapons are easier to keep supplied, while others use rarer ammo pools that can run dry much faster. That makes ammo part of build planning, not just looting.
